About CreditUnionDirectory.ca
An independent resource built by a small team of personal finance enthusiasts who got tired of reading about the same five banks over and over again.
Who we are
Canada has hundreds of credit unions. Member-owned, provincially regulated, spread across every province and territory from BC to Newfoundland and Labrador. Some have been serving their communities for decades. Many of them never show up in a Google search, a rate comparison, or a personal finance roundup, because they don't have marketing budgets the size of a Bay Street tower. We thought that was worth fixing.
What we actually do
A searchable directory and comparison tool covering 183+ Canadian credit unions, with no ads, affiliate pressure, or sponsored lists in sight.
Rate Comparisons
HISA, GIC, and mortgage rates sourced directly from credit unions across the country, updated regularly.
The Full Directory
Filterable by province, city, rate type, and deposit insurance. Whether you're in Toronto or Tignish, there's likely a credit union worth knowing about.
Digital Banking Alternatives
Fintechs that offer similar options to banks and other ways to manage your money with more freedom.
Guides and Explainers
Practical content on how credit unions work, how to join one, how deposit insurance differs from CDIC, and how to actually switch your banking.
Canadian Financial Calculators
Tools built specifically for Canadian tax rules: TFSA, RRSP, FHSA, RRIF, RESP, GIC, mortgage, HELOC, and more. Free, no email required.
The Learn Hub
Longer-form personal finance content on savings strategy, registered accounts, housing, and the real cost of decisions most Canadians face.
Why we built this
The big banks are not underserved in terms of coverage. They have entire content teams, affiliate partners, and comparison sites that list them first, regardless of whether they're actually the best option for the person searching.
Credit unions are different. They're owned by their members. Profits stay in the organization, which tends to mean better rates, lower fees, and service that doesn't feel like you're being handed off to a call centre script. The people running a local credit union in Moose Jaw or Moncton actually answer to the people banking with them.
We built this because we wanted a resource we'd actually use ourselves. Something that made it easy to find and compare credit unions across Canada without digging through individual websites, calling branches, or sorting through outdated forum posts.
Credit unions tracked
Across all 10 provinces, including smaller institutions that rarely appear in mainstream comparisons.
Data points per listing
Rates, deposit insurance, eligibility rules, branch info, and more — sourced from official pages.
Paid to be listed
No institution has ever paid to appear, rank higher, or be featured on this site.
Editorial independence
No credit union, bank, or financial institution pays to appear on this site. Nobody pays to be listed, ranked, featured, or placed at the top of a rate table. What you see reflects our research, nothing else.
Rate data comes from primary sources: credit union websites, published rate sheets, and direct verification. We update our information regularly to stay as current as possible.
Our full independence policyWhat we are and aren't
We're a research and reference tool. Nothing on CreditUnionDirectory.ca is financial advice, and we won't tell you which credit union to join or what to do with your money. Those decisions depend on your specific situation, and we're not licensed to make them for you.
What we can do is give you accurate, independently researched information and the tools to work with it. The full methodology behind how we research and present data is on our methodology page.
Start exploring
Credit unions serve over 13 million Canadians and often offer meaningfully better financial products than the major banks. The directory is a good place to start.
