SKCounts reflect credit unions with verified chequing data in our directory. Provincial pages include both unconditional free accounts and accounts that are free when a minimum balance or monthly transaction limit is met.
Why chequing is a province-by-province question
Credit unions are provincially regulated in Canada. The institutions you can join, the deposit insurance covering your money, and even the lineup of chequing products differ by province. A Saskatchewan resident has access to a different set of credit unions than someone in Ontario, even though many credit unions accept members from anywhere in Canada.
For chequing specifically, the value gap between unconditional free and conditional free is usually bigger than the gap between two free accounts at different institutions. The right account is the one whose conditions match how you actually use your money.
What to look for in a credit union chequing account
- 1.No-fee structure. Is the account free with no conditions, free if you keep a minimum balance, free under a transaction cap, or paid? Unconditional free is the simplest path.
- 2.Eligibility. Some credit unions are open to all Canadians. Others restrict membership by location, employer, or community. The provincial ranking notes which is which.
- 3.Deposit insurance. Provincial coverage. Four provinces offer unlimited insurance on credit union deposits, which is stronger than the federal $100,000 CDIC cap that covers banks.
- 4.Digital experience. Mobile app quality, e-Transfer support, and surcharge-free ATM access vary widely across credit unions. The profile pages capture each one.
Why Quebec isn't listed here
Quebec's credit union landscape is centred on Desjardins, a single cooperative network with a different structure than the rest of the country. Our directory focuses on credit unions in the nine other provinces, so Quebec isn't covered. If you're a Quebec resident looking for chequing options, Desjardins' own site is the primary source.
Credit unions in the territories
Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut don't have their own provincial credit union systems. If you live in one of the territories, the credit unions available to you are typically based in another province and offer membership to Canadians anywhere in the country. These open-to-all credit unions show up in the provincial rankings above, listed under their home province.
What we tracked and what we didn't
For every credit union in our directory we recorded whether a free chequing option exists and, if it's conditional, what type of condition applies. We did not capture the specific minimum balance amount or monthly transaction limit, because those numbers vary by credit union and change without notice.
Use the rankings to narrow the shortlist. For the exact current threshold at any specific credit union, visit that credit union's website.
